This Saturday, 21st of September sees World Clean Up Day take over the globe. As an International initiative that unites 157 countries to bring awareness to, and to take action to rid our planet of rubbish. Around the world people will clean up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets.
World Clean Up Day harnesses the power of everyday people to achieve incredible things by joining together. The beauty lies in cooperation and collaboration: building bridges between disparate communities and including all levels of society – from citizens to business, to government.
This world-changing idea began in the small northern European country of Estonia in 2008. 50,000 people united to clean up the entire country in just five hours. On that day, a global bottom-up civic movement was born and spread like wildfire around the globe. This captured the imaginations of people worldwide, who were inspired to follow suit with the same ambitious ‘one country, one-day’ formula.
Founder of #PlasticFreeBeautyDay, Yolanda Cooper and her We Are Paradoxx team took their local beach on Friday, 20th September for a clean up. They were supported by the Live Here Love Here scheme who partner with volunteers, businesses, schools and help improve local communities as part of the Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful environmental charity.
There is no Planet B, we all need to do everything we can.
We are not perfect, but by coming together to make small changes and contributions we can help to make a bigger change.
